CONTEMPORARY ROMANIAN AUTHOR

Alexandru Vlad (b. 1991, Rupea) writes and films for the same reasons. He is the author of "The Echo of the Sea" (2016), "The Last Fragments" (2026) and the novel "Where the Lights Go" (2026), and in parallel makes award-winning documentaries: two UCIN awards, in 2014 and 2016, a Gopo Awards nomination in 2015 and an honourable mention at the San Francisco Film Awards.

What links the two practices is a steady interest in what gets lost: villages emptying out, trades disappearing, memories quietly rewriting themselves. The books and films more often start from a concrete observation than from an idea, and the tone stays restrained even when the material is heavy.

He holds a PhD in Cinematography and Media from Babeș-Bolyai University (2019) and is an ANC-certified trainer. He teaches film to teenagers at the Children’s Palace in Cluj and works with the 12 Months Cultural Association.
